The history of Russian Samovar starts well before the restaurant itself. Originally Jilly’s Canteen, and owned by friend of Frank Sinatra, Jilly Rizzo, Samovar was the go to hot spot for Sinatra and The Rat Pack. In homage to Sinatra, Johnny Carson, and the good old boys, we decided to maintain the original red banquettes from back in those days. We also preserved the original bar as featured in The Manchurian Candidate and even unearthed original artwork from the talented people who frequented Jilly’s before we were fortunate enough to acquire this landmark location.

LAILA FAERMAN (VOCALS) is a multi-faceted vocal artist with a soulful voice and a wide-ranging repertoire. Born into a musical family, Laila was exposed to classical music at an early age, singing opera arias with her father, Josif Faerman, a classically trained opera baritone, and studying classical piano. Laila continued her musical studies with Pamela Kucenic, a soloist in the Metropolitan Opera, and has explored numerous genres, from jazz to French chanson, from pop music to folk, performing well-known standards, together with her own compositions, at popular venues such as the Metropolitan Room, Cleopatra’s Needle and at Webster Hall in New York City. In 2011, Laila immersed herself in the spiritual teachings and songs of Bengali meditation teacher, artist and poet, Sri Chinmoy. Laila appeared as a soloist in the Gandharva Loka Orchestra at a “Songs of the Soul” concert at NYU Skirball Auditorium, and at Duif Kirk in Amsterdam, and was invited to tour with “Concerts for Peace”, appearing in the prestigious Rudolfinum Dvorak Hall in Prague, Czech Republic, Teatro Regio Torino in Italy, and in Bulgaria Hall in Sofia. In 2022, she won the Grand Prix International Creative Arts Festival award in the category of jazz vocals. Laila has performed in the US, Europe and Asia, singing meditative music as well as her own original songs.
Branzino and county styled lamb were excellent. Service was very attentive. The ambiance was even better once the live piano music began.
Fantastic place for fine dining on the northwest edge of the theater district...In my case, I had a Georgian savory spiced cheesy bread as a starter (Khachapuri), and then delightfully spiced, grilled lamb lollypops (Karski) which were fantastic, wrapping things up with a lovely apple strudel...
